Batteries can operate over a wide range of temperatures but special care must be taken when charging, as extreme cold and high heat can reduce charge acceptance, varying by battery type:.

Improved Forecast Quality due to Vehicle Data


Modern cars continuously evolve into rolling computers and meter besides the motor performance and further technical quantities also the temperature outside the car. These measurements are used for optimised regulations of the air conditioning but also as source of information for drivers. One question arises naturally: Which potential does the data hold beyond these applications when it comes to enhancing the forecast quality of various weather products?


Temperature measurements can on the one hand be used as ground truth for the assimilation into numerical weather prediction models and on the other hand serve as database to define current conditions but also to enhance nowcasting systems. In the frame of a research project, the benefit of the assimilation of these measurements for different forecast horizons and parameters were examined using high resolution weather model calculations. In addition, concepts with the focus on road safety were developed and tested.

"The research results provide concrete insights into the influence of the temperature measurements on both the forecast quality of numerical weather prediction models and road safety relevant conditions and nowcast products. In a nutshell, explicit conclusions on the value and potential of the temperature measurements of the Daimler vehicle fleet were successfully gained."

Meteomatics' Weather API calculates a nowcast using the latest radar image, lightning data and satellite cloud cover. Our nowcasts are available in 5 minute timesteps for the next 2 hours, giving users insight into real-time forecasted weather conditions. 

 Meteomatics’ nowcasts provide precipitation amounts for all types, providing extra detail for hail where we forecast the maximum size of hail, forecasts for freezing rain that benefit from our advanced post processing methods and downscaling, allowing Meteomatics to accurately forecast the weather type and alert customers to the specific weather hazard, which many other modelling centres find difficult to forecast with the same level of confidence.

The downscaling performed by Meteomatics API to factor in detail of the local topography, combined with local weather stations to calibrate the weather forecast, allowing Meteomatics API to provide users with the adjusted forecast for each individual query made, providing users very accurate wind forecasts and weather alerts created in consideration of the topographic impacts on wind parameters.

As a Swiss business we have a lot of experience forecasting wintry weather conditions and delivering them to customers who depend on their accuracy for protection of property and life. Meteomatics’ API users are able to submit an API query for any road on the planet API to receive an accurate forecast that has already taken into account surface energy balance (driven by radiation), heat conduction model (simulated heat transfer in the ground) and a water/ice accumulation model (simulates road conditions).

Meteomatics Slippery Road Index

The road surface temperature parameter is important in allowing Meteomatics to calculate the very useful slippery road parameter, which can be configured to deliver warnings / alerts if the conditions of a slippery road are highly probable. Providing a probability of slippery road conditions within defined time period (0 - 100%).
